Project Outcomes

The Liverpool City Centre Movement Strategy (CCMS) is a comprehensive long term programme to improve transport infrastructure in Liverpool. Integral to the project is the reduction of road traffic in the city centre, the improvement of conditions for pedestrians and the upgrading of infrastructure for public transport. CATCH added value to the CCMS by strengthening partnership and funding a detailed design study aimed at making access to an important commercial district easier for sustainable modes of transport such as walking or cycling. Following this a number of measures have been approved including “all red” pedestrian areas and better pedestrian crossings, better infrastructure for buses, footpath improvements and improved cycling lanes and cycling parking provision.

ECOtravel day was held on the 5th June 2004 in Lord Street (Liverpool City Centre) and this was repeated in 2005. The day was used to highlight the benefits of sustainable travel and showcase the work of the ECOtravel Information Bureau and CATCH. The day also launched the city wide Green Transport Festival (GTF). The event was advertised through Merseytravel, on local radio, on the ECOtravel website and through many other means. Over 1000 people attended the event which showcased the new Honda IMA, a Toyota Prius and Liverpool City Councils LPG fuelled delivery van. The public commented on the fact that the exhibitions from Merseytravel, Liverpool City Council, TravelWise, The University of Liverpool, Merseyside Cycle Campaign and others were very useful and informative and they would welcome more events in the future. The profile of the ECOtravel bureau was raised and the CATCH project was highlighted. Surveys carried out at the two ECOtravel days revealed an annual increase in public awareness of the ECOtravel campaign and the hybrid buses operating on the new City Centre bus route.

The full evaluation of this aspect of the Liverpool demonstration projects can be found in chapter 7 of the CATCH Evaluation Report .
