Regional Background

Project Outcomes

Liverpool was named the European Capital of Culture 2008 and is undergoing radical structural change motivated by economic regeneration. The challenge now is to encourage both existing and new residents to adopt lifestyles with a low environmental impact.

EcoTravel Information Bureau
This one-stop shop provides both individuals and businesses with all the information that they may require about clean, healthy and sustainable travel in Liverpool. The bureau combines the work of Merseytravel and Merseyside TravelWise and the EcoTravel website can be found at http://www.ecotravel.org.uk/

Community Mobility Plans
These have demonstrated to individuals living in central Liverpool that there are alternatives to the private car. Merseytravel and TravelWise have worked closely with property developers on the design of proposed housing schemes to ensure that they accommodate the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.

Individualised Marketing
The CATCH healthy travel promotion aimed to encourage greater use of sustainable transport for trips to the city centre through the use of one-to-one contact. The Aigburth/Grassendale area in South East Liverpool was selected as the target area for implementation of the project. Surveys of households were conducted with the results analysing what motivating factors could be drawn on to encourage change. A tailored marketing package was then sent to households with support phone calls encouraging use of incentives and information. Journey planners were produced including appropriate journey details and also health or environmental or stress related benefits according to the interest of that individual.

Healthy Travel Incentives
CATCH also introduced the innovative concept of calorie mapping. This has provided a map of the city centre and some examples of journeys that could be made by foot. The number of calories burnt by making these journeys is displayed, providing a completely new incentive for residents to travel greater distances by foot.

The evaluation of the Healthy Urban Lifestyles demonstration projects can be found in chapter 7 of the CATCH Evaluation Report .
